That total labor force participation is grinding lower and lower is well known, and was confirmed again in Friday's jobs report.
David Schawel has put up the following table showing some numbers over the last 11 years.
What's striking, and interesting, is that the participation rate has been shooting straight downhill ever since 2000, and didn't even move much higher during the peak of the total number of employed during 2007, when 146 million Americans had jobs. While the bad economic conditions may have exacerbated the lack of participation, a lot of it is clearly secular.
