What Is a Secured Credit Card ? Pros & Cons for Rebuilding Credit

Having bad credit is a Catch-22. You need an active credit line to help rebuild your credit, but most lenders won’t extend you credit if you have a troubled financial past. In fact, most lenders set a credit score cutoff point and if you fall below it, you won’t qualify for any traditional credit card. [...]

Will The Next iPhone Be Thinner And Wider? A Gazillion Leaked Cases Say Yes

iphone5casewideThe Internet is awash in purported iPhone 5 cases. Like most iPhone related rumors, it's hard to decipher fact from fantasy, but the sheer amount of nearly identical cases seem to state that at least several manufacturing houses have the same iPhone dimensions. The image above is a iPhone 4 in one of these many cases. Look different? Yep, this case, and the many like it, are clearly for a phone that's both thinner and wider.

Call Of Duty?s $50 Per Year Subscription Service Heralds An Expensive Future For Gaming

elite_spaceThe world's largest game franchises have become industries unto themselves. World of Warcraft supports a huge halo industry of gold farmers and grey markets. Farmville and its ilk have turned microtransactions into millions. The teams developing individual games like the next Assassin's Creed or Gears of War are larger than many entire businesses. So it's not surprising that the stakes keep getting raised. Call of Duty is among the most popular games in the world, and although selling millions of copies of the game at $40-60 is a real source of revenue, Activision is hoping that their new Call of Duty Elite service will bring in recurring revenue and rally the fanbase. But will that fanbase accept a yearly $50 fee on top of the game itself?

MONEY GAME TIP OF THE DAY: There Are Still Mutual Funds For Small Investors

Not everyone has the capital to invest with the big boys. Most of us start small.

David Snowball's Mutual Fund Observer (via Abnormal Returns) has compiled some funds that those of us with thinner wallets can still jump in on. There used to be tons. When the MFO compiled a list in the 1990s, there were around 600. Since then, most raised their investment minimums until T. Rowe Price was the last of the major firms that still carried the product -- now they're giving it the axe.

So you're left with about 130 options, and this piece of knowledge from the Mutual Fund Observer:

By my best reading, there are thirteen smaller fund families and a half dozen individual funds still taking the risk of getting stiffed by undisciplined investors.  The families willing to waive their normal investment minimums are:

Andrew Mason?s Silicon Valley Problem: He?s Not Here

andrew-mason-grouponEarlier this year at All Things D, Groupon CEO Andrew Mason said one of his regrets was not opening an office in Silicon Valley earlier. The implication was that he was talking about not taking advantage of the superior coding talent, but I took it another way. Being in Silicon Valley is like playing for the Yankees. You get knocked around more than anywhere else, the glare of the media spotlight is more brutal and the expectations are higher than they'd be in any other city. You also get the coaching and, say, run support or bullpen arms that the most outrageously rich franchise in baseball history can afford. If you've got the chops, all of that undoubtably makes you a better player. Don't get me wrong: I hate the Yankees. But I can understand on a professional level, why so many players leave teams I love to go play there.
