With Competition Looming, Zipcar Misses Q2 2012 Revenue And Earnings Expectations

ZipcarZipcar is seeing increased competition in the car-sharing market, which is one reason that it might not be growing as quickly as it, or analysts, like. Zipcar reported second-quarter loss of $422,000 today, or $0.01 a share, compared to a net loss of $5.6 million, or $0.17 a share, in the prior year's second quarter. The earnings came on revenues of $70.8 million, which is up 15 percent from $61.6 million in the second quarter 2011. But Wall Street analysts expected the company to break even this quarter, with revenue rising 18.7 percent to $73.1 million. And Zipcar missed its own revenue forecast of between between $71 million and $74 million. Zipcar shares popped during the IPO, rising to nearly $30 a share. But ever since, they've been on a gradual decline, and closed out the day pre-earnings at 10:50. Zipcar saw its shares drop TK percent in after hours trading as a result.

6 Options If You Need to Relocate and Can?t Sell Your House

In June of 2010, my husband and I relocated from Columbus, Ohio, to Lafayette, Indiana, so that he could start a new job. Our house in Columbus was in a well-established and highly attractive neighborhood that had historically been immune to dips in the housing market. Despite the fact that we were placing our house [...]

Researchers Reveal Why Gas Prices Rocket So Quickly And Fall So Slowly

Chinese rocket

It's a common complaint among drivers -- gas prices shoot up quickly, but they take their time floating down.

It's a phenomenon called rockets and feathers, and, industry analysts say, it's been going on for a long time.

Gasoline retail prices rise four times faster than they fall after the wholesale price changes, according to a 2010 Federal Trade Commission (FTC) study.

In some places around the country, gasoline retailers sell at a loss when wholesale prices are high, and they try to make up that loss when prices go down, said Matthew Chesnes, the economist who conducted the FTC study.

Retailers say keeping prices higher for as long as possible is the only way for them to make a little bit of a profit, or break even in some cases.

But why would retailers sell at a loss in the first place?

Gas stations make most of their profit from the convenience store attached, said Jay Ricker, who operates about 50 gas stations in Indiana. If a sign boasting low prices draws drivers to the station, they're more likely to spend money in the store.

"People will go somewhere else to buy their gas if your price is significantly higher," said Jeff Lenard, a spokesman for the National Association of Convenience Stores. "And to some people, a penny is significantly higher."

The competition usually isn't as cutthroat on the way down as it is on the way up, Chesnes said. Some research suggests that when prices are high, buyers search around to find a better deal. Immediately after prices go down, though, buyers don't search as hard. This gives a cushion for the station owners to lower their prices in smaller increments.

Gas prices are climbing -- Tuesday's national average was $3.50 per gallon, up 17 cents from a month ago. Before recent increases, the national average had dropped 61 cents from $3.94 per gallon on April 5 to a low of $3.33 on July 2.

"It seems like you'll read in the paper that the price for a barrel of oil has fallen, and then you'll have to wait forever" before it hits your pocketbook, said Joan Freyer, a Deposit, N.Y., resident who was vacationing on the New Jersey shore last week.

The Federal Trade Commission is still conducting an investigation into the possibility of price manipulation in 2011 following increases in crude oil and refined petroleum product prices.

The FTC has conducted similar investigations in the past â€" it looked into price spikes after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and in the Midwest in 2000 â€" to find whether members of the gasoline industry were violating antitrust laws. Neither investigation found evidence of wrongdoing.

Washington, D.C., resident Abby Letteres said she is used to the constant swing of gas prices, especially during the summer, but that doesn't mean she likes it.

As she filled gas for $3.69 a gallon after a swim practice Monday, Letteres said: "I do it out of necessity."

SocGen's Client Survey Shows That 69% Expect The ECB To Disappoint Tomorrow

Mario Draghi

After the Fed failed to act today, all eyes are on the European Central Bank which will release its monetary policy decision tomorrow.

Markets will be watching to see if ECB president Mario Draghi will stand by his promise to "do whatever it takes to preserve the euro".

Some expect that Draghi could announce, that he wants sovereign bond yields to converge within 300 - 400 basis points of the benchmark yields on German bunds.

In a new report, Societe Generale's Sebastien Galy writes that a survey of their research client base showed that 69 percent of investors think the ECB will disappoint.

Among the 69 percent that thought the ECB would disappoint, banks were at 50 percent, hedge funds 68 percent, asset managers 71 percent, and corporates 100 percent.

Here's a sample of what some of their clients said when asked if the ECB would disappoint:

  • "Draghi will deliver... he has no choice if he wants to hold on to his credibility."
  • "...On the ECB front words alone will not suffice tomorrow given the move we have had in peripheral spreads and equities since Draghi's comments.  The market is priced and ready for decisive action and way forward from tomorrow's meeting and should we not get that look for the Treasury market to quickly erase today's move and perhaps then some as we go back into risk off mode in Europe."
  • "No ECB will not disappoint. Draghi was strong on his message and will remain so tomorrow when he delivers policy."
  • "Yes, ECB will disappoint. I'm in the camp who thinks Draghi was doing verbal intervention only. ECB will maybe implement some weak purchases program and some slight rate cuts but no more than that, which will be negative (at best neutral) for EUR. Those expecting a bazooka and a EUR rally will be disappointed."
  • "Initially yes in that won't announce anything concrete on bond purchases and markets will sell off on that but think once all the info is assimilated (I expect he will announce the intention to buy bonds in concert with EFSF further down the line but probably contingent on MOU in place) and Q+A is done we will recover some of the losses as expect a much stronger tone from him in Q+A than normally the case. So kind of expecting a decent sell-off first then somewhat of a recovery but prob overall down day for risk assets from immediate pre ECB levels so overall small disappointment but nothing major."
