Facebook Timeline For Pages Kills Marketing Feature: Default Landing Tabs

Death of the Default Landing TabAmongst the beautiful covers and pinned posts, there's one disadvantage of the new Facebook Timeline for Pages redesign. Pages can no longer display one of their tab applications as their default landing page that non-fans first see when they visit. This powerful marketing feature let Pages set up welcome app that teased special content like contests or coupons, but required users to Like the Page for access. Without default landing tabs, non-fans have to actively click through the little app tiles overshadowed by a Page's cover. Many won't, and it will cost marketers Likes as well as email signups, contest entries, and other key performance indicators. The change is a noble one that prioritizes the user experience and the site's long-term health, but several marketers I've talked to are already grumbling.

iZettle Launches In The Nordics, UK Launch On The Cards

5749761765_b7e08cb344_biZettle, the Swedish mobile payments startup that basically competes with Square, has gone live on the App store in the Nordic markets today (Denmark, Norway and Finland). It's making 5,000 card reader devices available in each country. They've also appointed a UK managing director, Stewart Roberts. Stewart was former Director of Global Innovation at Barclaycard. A launch in the UK is therefore all but confirmed. Unlike square, iZettle's card reader is a chip and pin, which makes it more secure than Square. However it doesn't have quite the same advantages, as its reader uses Apple's proprietary connector so it has to pay Apple for the license on that.

Almost Three: A Brief History Of Foursquare Time (And A Look At Its Future)

foursquare_logo

Six years ago I first set foot in Silicon Valley to attend one of the early "Hack Day" events that are now perpetual. It was an event where fellow nerds were creating web-apps using whatever technology they could get their hands on. VC's and Valley luminaries were judging and dishing out fat prizes. Mike Arrington was moderating. We were being treated like rockstars, and I was hooked.

I quickly found myself obsessed with creating products; trying to follow the work of Steve Jobs and other product leaders that did it best. With so many approaches to product management, I found but a single common philosophy that bound all successful products together

Habits Are The New Viral: Why Startups Must Be Behavior Experts

2386473Face it; you?re hooked. It?s your uncontrollable urge to check for email notifications on your phone. It?s your compulsion to visit Facebook or Twitter for just a few minutes, but somehow find yourself still scrolling after an hour. It?s the fact that if I recommended a book to purchase, your mind would flash ?Amazon? like a gaudy neon sign. If habits are defined as repeated and automatic behaviors, then technology has wired your brain so you behave exactly the way it wants you to. In an online world of ever-increasing distractions, habits matter. In fact, the economic value of web businesses increasingly depends on the strength of the habitual behavior of their users. These habits ultimately will be a deciding factor in what separates startup winners and losers.

Iran Just Made Things Even Worse For Greece

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

This story hits the trifecta of big stories these days: Greece, oil, and tension in Iran.

Reuters:

Iran has refused to give Greece a shipment of 500,000 barrels of crude oil in a retaliatory measure against European Union sanctions on the Islamic state's lifeblood, oil, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Sunday.

"Oil tankers that had come to transfer 500,000 barrels of Iranian oil to a refinery in Greece had to go back empty-handed after Iran refused to give the shipment," Fars reported, without giving a source. Oil Ministry officials were not available to comment.

For Greece, this might be a taste of what it would deal with if it ever tried paying for things in the future in Drachma.
